
Media Technology 1, 2, 3, & 4 at Mountain View Prep is a cluster of courses in media production with an emphasis on sports. Classes focus on audio and video production techniques. Students gain hands-on experience in shooting video, editing, writing, directing, producing, and reporting, using industry-standard equipment and software, while learning about related fields. Safety training is included. Students also explore ethical use of technology, teamwork, and career development. The course includes both practical production skills and an understanding of professional media practices, preparing students for various media-related careers.

Celeste spent the fall working the sidelines at our MVP Football games. She interviewed the players and coaches after the games and learned important reporting skills.
​Requirements
​
Media technology at MVP is designed as 4 semester-long courses. Students will learn the fundamentals of television broadcasting, sports broadcasting, ethics, and professionalism in the workplace. Students completing the 4 courses will finish with a completer certificate and professional certifications. A 2.5 GPA required. Students will be required to work at least one game per semester. Some students will also have the opportunity to join SkillsUSA and compete with other Media Technology students across the state.

This is a 10 hour safety course that teaches basic safety information. It’s designed by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration to help workers identify and avoid workplace hazards.

Class Information - Media Tech 1
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Media Technology 1 is the first course in the Media Technology program. In this course, students will explore the general field of communications focused primarily on media production industries. Students will get hands-on experience in basic production techniques for audio and video. They will work collaboratively writing, producing, directing, and editing projects using industry-standard software and equipment. Safety is emphasized in this course and students will have to take a safety test. Students will also learn about related fields such as graphic design, broadcast journalism, animation, sound design and engineering, special effects, online media development, marketing, and corporate communications.

INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY: Students will be given challenging real-world projects and assignments typical of the media field. High-quality work is expected, and students will be given opportunities to complete work that meets the standards specified during instruction. Classroom activities will include reading, writing, research, problem solving, skill demonstrations, and projects. Students will occasionally work in teams but will be expected to complete individual assignments concerning the team’s work. Assessment methods will be varied according to the curriculum during the study. We aim for every student to receive relevant and rigorous instruction to prepare them for the next step in pursuing further education or a career in media technology.
STANDARDS/COURSE GOALS: Students are expected to meet the Media Technology standards as outlined by the South Carolina Department of Education. Standards may be viewed on the SC Department of Education website at www.ed.sc.gov.
GRADING PRACTICES:
The majority of assessments will be project based. However, we will have quizzes on terms, tv technology, and other information throughout the study.
Major Assessments: 60%
Minor Assessments : 40%
Makeup work: The student will have 5 days after returning to school to make up missed classwork/tests.

Phones must remain in the student’s bag per the SC "Free to Focus" Law.

About the Instructor

Kathryn Foessel is an Emmy Award winning TV Producer with over 20 years of experience in Broadcasting. Kathryn’s professional TV career began as a Production Assistant at WSPA-TV in 1996. At that time, she was a senior at Dorman High School. In 1997, she began working at WIS-TV while attending the University of South Carolina-Columbia. She worked her way up through the ranks to the position of Editor, Photographer, and then Associate Producer. After graduation in 2001, she took her first full-time Job as Producer at WCSC in Charleston. In 2002, she accepted a job as a Producer back at WSPA-TV. Kathryn was recognized with an Emmy Award for Best Daily Newscast in 2004. She won another Emmy in 2008 for Breaking News. In 2012, Kathryn transitioned into the Entertainment Division producing Scene on 7. In 2014, Kathryn was promoted to Executive Producer, overseeing Your Carolina, Studio 62, and Scene on 7. Kathryn transitioned to back to the News Department to lead the morning news team at 7 News before leaving in May of 2024 to teach Broadcasting at Mountain View Prep.
